I just got back from a children’s concert that was put on by the Winston-Salem Symphony. The Symphony received funding this year for a Discovery Series of concerts designed to introduce children to symphony orchestra music. The first in the series was music from Harry Potter; a magician giving a performance in the foreground and the orchestra playing in the back of the stage. Today’s was Alice in Wonderland meets Peter and the Wolf. The dances performed on a section of the stage in front with the orchestra again performing at the back. We sat in the balcony today and had a wonderful view of the stage. The narrator for both productions did a great job of explaining the parts the different instruments take to make the appropriate music for the story. I found it very gratifying that the floor and balcony were almost sold out. It is wonderful to live in an area where productions of this caliber are available.
